Black Forest Beer Release, Alewerks Brewing Company, 12 - 9:00 pm, 189 B Ewell Rd., Williamsburg. First, Brewmaster Geoff Logan got his hands on barrels from Woodford Reserve. Before these barrels aged Bourbon they were used for Brandy (of unknown designation). Geoff didn’t know what he was going to do with them but knew there was potential. Brainstorming sessions led to the notion of adding to the barrels an Imperial Chocolate Stout and Montmorency cherries with the goal of recreating the flavor profile of a German Black Forest Cake. The Brandy soaked into the oak should combine with the sour cherry to invoke the traditional addition of kirschwasser to the cake recipe. Obviously copious amounts of chocolate dominate the flavor profile while hints of creamy vanilla from the Bourbon are the figurative icing on the cake. Available on draft and in 22oz bottles. First come, first served. 'Capt'n Crabby’ food truck will be here all day, Ray Meeks Music will be providing the tunes. We’ll have cornhole set up, beer pouring - you don’t want to miss this!

What is a FIRKIN keg? “A firkin is a unit of measure and also the size of a particular kind of keg used for cask conditioning; one quarter of a barrel, 72 pints, 9 imperial gallons. Firkins can be wooden or metal. The most curious thing about them is the manner in which they are tapped. In order to keep air out, the keg is laid on its side and the spout is driven in horizontally. It can get a bit messy if not done correctly. A breathing tube is inserted in the bung which is now on top to enhance the flow of beer using only gravity. CO2 is not used to carbonate or push the beer out. Thus you get a naturally fermented and carbonated beer in a small batch. Many think beer tastes much better this way.” ~~Hoppy Trails~~
